Muhammad Adi crowned ‘Best Public Speaker’

LAKSAMANA College of Business (LCB) held its first-ever ‘Public Speaking Competition’ recently.

Ten students vied to be recognised as the ‘Best LCB Public Speaker,’ discussing a variety of interesting, sometimes controversial topics of their choice.

Muhammad Adi bin Abdul Quddus bagged the top spot with his talk on ‘Anxiety’ and how it can be used to “drive us forward, rather than allowing it to overwhelm us.”

Dayangku Siti Nur Amira binti Pengiran Haji Tuah discussed the ‘Bombing of Hiroshima,’ while Muhammad Safwan Tal’at bin Haji Sofian spoke about the need to recognise children for their communication skills, and not just their ability to score well at school.

All 10 participants demonstrated the necessary skills required to be great public speakers, shown to them by college lecturer Azarul Ahmed, a certified Cambridge examiner.

The group worked on skills such as ‘cohesion’ and ‘coherence’ – organising their thoughts and arguments in a logical, easy-to-follow order.

They also learnt about techniques such as ‘repetition,’ most famously demonstrated by the legendary Martin Luther King in his ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, in which he deliberately repeated this phrase to emphasise his points to arouse emotion.
